If you are squeamish of the bugs, please prepare adequately for your next visit to the lake!… They’re back!, They’re back a plenty!!…and with courage, vengeance, and a hungering for blood! Bug repellants, electronic zappers, thermacells, bring them all! or stay indoors! The blackflies & mosquitoes are back for another season on Aylen lake.
All kidding aside, there are some products, or ole time recipes that do help to curb them. I have still not found a product, that works 100% during the ‘peak’, of bug season. Yet, some of todays’ top product brands are very effective.
Personally, I like some of the ole’ loggers recipes. These guys spent years in the bush, so they speak from experience. One, told me to use the original lemon Sunlight dish detergent. Bathe, shower, and wash your hair with it exclusively, during the season. I can attest that this definitely helps with mosquitoes (probably the lemon/scent). Another, gave a recipe with the original ‘Listerine’ mouthwash used. The ‘Listerine’ can also be poured, say around the perimeter of a deck, to provide an area of protection. I’m not saying it works, or doesn’t! I tried it twice, and the rain washed it away twice. I think a couple of citronella plants planted near to the deck will have the same effect.
Bug hats & jackets, specialized clothing, and the way we dress, can also have an effect on bug attraction. Light coloured attire works best, avoid the dark colours. Tuck your pants in your socks, and cover up where possible. Also, your local pharmacy can suggest a few helpers’ too! Mine, provided a citronella based oil rub, that also is very effective on mosquitoes.
We can also hope, that the local bat population does their part. As well, the birds, fish, reptiles, & dragonflies, are all welcome to join the ‘Big Bug Buffet!’
Spring is beautiful season, but with the bugs, its’ my least favorite,
Enjoy the lake, everyone. Find your bug free zone!
